President William Ruto has received a symbolic gift of 100 camels from elders in Wajir County during Madaraka Day celebrations held at Wajir Stadium on Monday, June 1.

Wajir Governor Ahmed Abdullahi announced the gesture, describing it as the community’s highest form of honour for leaders they hold in high regard.

He said the camels will be delivered to the President at a location of his choice.

“When you honour summons in our culture, the highest honour is given to kings. The community for the king contributes 100 camels, the elders of Wajir have said that you are our king, and they will give you 100 camels to be delivered by them at a place of your choice, you are our sultan,” Governor Abdullahi announced.

The county leadership also expressed appreciation to President Ruto for selecting Wajir to host the 63rd Madaraka Day celebrations, noting it as a significant honour for the region.

During the event, the governor further proposed that Wajir Stadium be renamed in honour of the late former minister Ahmed Khalif, citing his contribution as both a political and religious leader.

President Ruto led the national celebrations at the 10,000-capacity stadium, which was filled early in the morning as residents turned out in large numbers.

Senior government officials, including Deputy President Kithure Kindiki and several Cabinet Secretaries, attended the event.

The celebrations began earlier than usual to accommodate local weather conditions and allow time for Muslim prayers during the day.
