Protests erupted in Nanyuki on Monday, June 1, as area residents took to the streets to reject the proposed plans to set up an Ebola virus quarantine facility in the area.
According to reports, the demonstrations saw locals march through parts of the town carrying placards and leaves, chanting slogans rejecting the proposed facility.
According to the protesters, the Ebola quarantine facility will expose the community to unnecessary health risks and a potential outbreak of the deadly virus in the country.
In a video seen by Whisperswire, police could later be seen engaging the protesters in running battles as they try to restore order in the affected areas.
The protests come amid controversy surrounding the United States-backed quarantine facility at the Nanyuki airbase.
The facility is expected to be controlled by the Kenya Defence Forces and will host US citizens exposed to the Ebola virus, reports which sparked public outrage, with leaders, human rights defenders, and the public rejecting the quarantine facility.
The High Court also issued conservatory orders suspending the planned construction pending the hearing and determination of the case petitioned before.
However, while speaking in an interview, Health Cabinet Secretary Aden Duale cleared the air that the faculty is also being built for the welfare of Kenyans.
Apart from that, other twelve facilities will be built across the country.
