A police constable attached to the Special Police Intercept and Verification (SPIV) has been shot dead.
Reports indicate that he was shot dead on Tuesday, June 16, in the evening after a routine inspection of motorcycles turned to violence.
According to reports, the officers were patrolling with three colleagues when they stopped a rider whose motorcycle lacked the unique registration code required for genuine boda boda operators in Thika town.
However, when the officers removed the bike’s ignition key, an argument escalated between the officers and the rider.

In the argument, the rider overpowered the constable, drew a firearm and shot him in the throat.
While the police dove for cover before they could return fire, the gunman got a chance to escape.
The suspect ran several meters, seized another motorcycle that was ferrying a passenger near the Royale Hotel and sped off dropping a loaded magazine that crime scene investigators recovered.
The shot officer was rushed to Thika Nursing home but succumbed to his injuries.
