Police Break Silence on Fatal Huruma Shooting of KMTC Student

The National Police Service (NPS) has released a statement following the fatal shooting of a Kenya Medical Training College (KMTC) student during a confrontation between police officers and youths in Huruma, Nairobi.

In the statement issued on Sunday, February 8, the NPS detailed the events that led to the deadly incident, the unrest that followed, and the measures being taken to ensure accountability.

According to the police, the situation began on the morning of Saturday, February 7, after a member of the public reported an alleged robbery at Huruma Police Station.

Officers responded to the complaint and made two arrests earlier in the day.

Further investigations later resulted in two additional suspects being arrested at around 7:30pm.

The NPS noted that tensions heightened during the second arrest when one of the suspects reportedly incited nearby youths, triggering a confrontation that later escalated into disorder.

According to the police, information reached them shortly after the incident that a civilian had been killed.

Following the incident, police said security in Huruma worsened, with unrest reported and two vehicles allegedly set on fire.

The NPS added that accountability measures are underway, with IPOA already on the ground investigating and police fully cooperating.

The service expressed regret over the loss of life and urged residents to remain calm as investigations continue.
