Divisions within the Orange Democratic Movement (ODM) have deepened after a faction opposed to the broad-based government launched a separate grassroots tour to strengthen the party’s support under the Linda Mwananchi banner.
The group held its first public rally in Busia County on Sunday, February 8, where it presented a list of demands and strongly ruled out any form of cooperation with the ruling United Democratic Alliance (UDA).
Addressing supporters during the tour, Siaya Governor James Orengo maintained that ODM would not enter into any pact with President William Ruto’s party.

He argued that the party must forge its own political direction as the country heads toward the 2027 General Election.
Orengo further asserted that ODM has the strength to form the next government on its own and should field a presidential candidate, rejecting proposals for political mergers or power-sharing deals with UDA.
He also cautioned against what he termed political brokerage within the party, accusing certain individuals aligned with the broad-based government of attempting to trade ODM’s influence for personal benefit.
Orengo insisted that the party’s decisions must remain firmly in the hands of its supporters and not be dictated by secret arrangements or external forces.
He maintained that ODM would not be absorbed into any other political outfit.
He further urged supporters in the region to distance themselves from leaders he claimed were involved in behind-the-scenes dealings with the ruling coalition.
