Orengo Questions Oburu Oginga’s Ability to Steer ODM Forward

Siaya Governor James Orengo has reiterated doubts over Senator Oburu Oginga’s capacity to effectively lead the Orange Democratic Movement (ODM).

Orengo argued that ODM requires a strong leader who has actively participated in Kenya’s liberation struggle, like the late Raila Odinga.

Speaking on Sunday, March 1, he described ODM as a political powerhouse that cannot be led by someone unwilling or unable to challenge the status quo.

He further suggested that Oburu lacks the political acumen inherited by his father, the late Jaramogi Oginga Odinga, which allowed Raila to rise to prominence.

According to the governor, the party needs a leader who is a true political strategist and fighter.

Orengo also indicated that he would be willing to lead ODM if the party members selected him at the upcoming National Delegates Conference (NDC).

Oburu Oginga assumed leadership of the Orange party following the death of his younger brother, Raila Odinga.

Since taking over last October, he has faced significant challenges in uniting the party, with internal factionalism testing his leadership.

Oburu heads the faction that supports the broad-based government, which is at odds with the wing led by embattled secretary general Edwin Sifuna, where Orengo aligns.

The Sifuna faction opposes the government-aligned stance and resists ODM backing President William Ruto in his re-election bid.

They also contend that Oburu’s tenure is invalid, arguing that he was not elected through the NDC.
