The 2026 Formula One season kicked off at Melbourne’s Albert Park with a dramatic Australian Grand Prix that saw Mercedes stamp their authority early.
George Russell led from pole to secure victory, while rookie teammate Andrea Kimi Antonelli finished second, delivering Mercedes a commanding 1–2 finish.
Ferrari also demonstrated competitive strength. Charles Leclerc surged from fourth on the grid to briefly lead before settling for third, while Lewis Hamilton finished fourth in his second season with Ferrari.
The race began with fireworks as Leclerc snatched the lead into Turn 1, sparking a thrilling battle with Russell. Their duel allowed Antonelli and Hamilton to join the fight, creating a four-way contest at the front.
Mercedes’ superior race strategy, including a well-executed one-stop plan, ultimately proved decisive, giving Russell his first win of the season and Antonelli a dream debut podium.
Beyond the frontrunners, the spotlight fell on Cadillac, the newest entrant to Formula One. With Valtteri Bottas and Sergio Pérez behind the wheel, Cadillac impressed by finishing in the points, signaling their potential to challenge established teams.
The expanded 2026 grid now features 11 teams and 22 drivers, making this season one of the most competitive in recent history.
Fans were treated to a mix of technical intrigue and on-track drama, with new regulations emphasizing energy deployment strategies and tire management. Mercedes appeared to adapt best, while Ferrari showed flashes of brilliance but lacked consistency.
The championship standings after round one place Russell at the top with 26 points, Antonelli second with 18, and Leclerc third with 15. Hamilton sits fourth, keeping Ferrari firmly in contention.
As the season moves to China for the next Grand Prix, all eyes will be on whether Ferrari can close the gap and if Cadillac can continue to surprise.
