Liverpool Suffer First Champions League Defeat After Fenerbahce Fightback

Liverpool suffered their first defeat in the UEFA Champions League league phase after losing 3-2 to Fenerbahce in Istanbul on Wednesday night, November 4, surrendering the lead twice before Vedat Muriqi scored the decisive goal.

The English side started positively and took the lead in the 25th minute through Trey Nyoni, whose low effort found the net after taking a deflection.

Fenerbahce responded four minutes later when Mason Greenwood’s deflected free-kick beat goalkeeper Alisson Becker to level the contest.

Liverpool regained the advantage in the 69th minute through substitute Alexander Isak, who headed home a cross from Cody Gakpo.

The goal appeared to put the visitors in a strong position to collect another three points.

However, Fenerbahce responded almost immediately, with Archie Brown scoring in the 73rd minute after a short-corner routine caused problems in Liverpool’s defence.

The Turkish side continued pressing and completed the comeback six minutes later.

Muriqi scored the winner in the 79th minute, heading home Brown’s delivery to spark celebrations among the home supporters.

Liverpool were unable to find another equaliser as Fenerbahce held on for a memorable victory.

The result ended Liverpool’s perfect start to the league phase after three consecutive wins, while Fenerbahce registered their first victory in this season’s competition.

The defeat leaves Liverpool with work to do as they seek to maintain their position among the teams competing for automatic qualification.
