Ivory Coast made a winning return to the FIFA World Cup after Amad Diallo scored a dramatic late goal to secure a 1-0 victory over Ecuador in their Group E opener at Philadelphia Stadium on Sunday.
The West African nation, playing in its first World Cup since 2014, appeared destined to settle for a goalless draw before Diallo struck in the 90th minute to hand the Elephants a crucial three points and an early advantage in the race for a place in the knockout stages.
The match was played at Philadelphia Stadium in the United States, where both teams created several scoring opportunities in a highly competitive encounter. Ecuador started brightly and came close to taking the lead on multiple occasions during the first half.
John Yeboah and Alan Minda both hit the crossbar for Ecuador in the opening stages of the game as the South Americans piled pressure on the Ivorian defence. However, Ivory Coast goalkeeper Yahia Fofana and his backline remained composed to keep the match level.

Ivory Coast also threatened going forward and came close through Elye Wahi, whose effort struck the woodwork during the second half. Teenager Yan Diomande was among the standout performers for the African side, using his pace and creativity to trouble the Ecuadorian defence throughout the match.
His performance earned him the Player of the Match award.
As the game entered its closing stages, both teams pushed for a winner. With just minutes remaining, defender Wilfried Singo produced a powerful run down the right flank before finding Diallo near the edge of the penalty area.
The Manchester United winger, who had entered the match as a second-half substitute, controlled the ball and calmly fired a left-footed shot beyond Ecuador goalkeeper Hernan Galindez to spark celebrations among the Ivorian players and supporters.
The goal proved decisive as Ecuador had little time to respond before the final whistle.
The defeat ended Ecuador’s impressive 19-match unbeaten run, which had stretched back to September 2024. Despite creating several chances and striking the woodwork twice in the first half, the South Americans were unable to find a breakthrough against a disciplined Ivory Coast side.
Speaking after the match, Ivory Coast coach Emerse Fae praised his players for their determination and focus, saying the victory reflected the team’s ambition of making a strong impact at the tournament.
The result gives Ivory Coast a positive start to their World Cup campaign and keeps alive hopes of reaching the knockout stage for the first time in the country’s history. The Elephants currently sit among the leading teams in Group E alongside Germany, who defeated Curacao in the group’s other match.
Ivory Coast will next face Germany in a crucial Group E encounter, while Ecuador will be looking to bounce back when they take on Curacao.
For the Elephants, however, the night belonged to Amad Diallo. His late strike not only secured victory but also announced Ivory Coast’s return to the world stage in dramatic fashion, giving African football another memorable moment at the 2026 FIFA World Cup.
