The Kenya African National Union (KANU) party has appointed Mercy Wanyeki as its new National Executive Director.
At just 27 years old, Wanyeki becomes the first woman to ever hold the office, marking a significant milestone in the party’s 65-year history.
The appointment was made by party leader Hon. Gideon Moi and reinforces KANU’s commitment to reform, youth empowerment, gender inclusion, and institutional renewal.

Wanyeki is no stranger to the party’s inner workings. She previously served as Director of Finance and Administration and as Assistant International Relations Officer, roles in which she played a critical part in KANU’s restructuring and reorganization efforts.
During her tenure, she has been instrumental in attracting a new generation of members to the party, strengthening operational systems, and representing KANU with distinction in regional and international engagements.
Her elevation to the top administrative post reflects the party’s confidence in a young leader who has consistently demonstrated competence, commitment, and a clear vision for the future of KANU.
The appointment also signals the party’s determination to open leadership opportunities to young people and women, breaking with tradition and embracing a more inclusive political culture.
