Gachagua Breaks Silence on Ruto’s ‘Petty Thief’ Accusation

Former Deputy President and DCP leader Rigathi Gachagua has fired back at President William Ruto over allegations of being a “petty thief.”

Speaking on Saturday, February 14, in Melil Ward, Narok County, Gachagua said President Ruto lacks the moral authority to accuse others.

“Ruto was in North Eastern saying there are petty thieves. A petty thief is small; I wonder how a bigger thief can talk about small thieves,” Gachagua said.

The former DP further accused the Head of State of illegally seizing land belonging to the Maasai community.

“When it comes to theft, you have no moral authority. Those who have suffered most under your presidency are the Maasai people,” he added.

Gachagua went on to pledge that if elected President in 2027, he will reclaim land he says was unlawfully taken and restore it to the Maasai community.

He promised that within six months of assuming office, all such land would be returned to its rightful owners.

Gachagua’s remarks come in the wake of a sharp rebuke from President William Ruto, who recently accused him of misconduct during his tenure as a District Officer, claiming he had previously misappropriated relief food.

The President questioned Gachagua’s credibility to comment on issues of drought, hunger, and food distribution, citing his past administrative record.

“You were fired because you were stealing relief food, then you come here lecturing us about relief food. You are the last person, least qualified, with no moral authority to tell anybody anything on matters of relief food because you are a petty thief,” President Ruto noted.

The exchange follows Gachagua’s earlier criticism of the government’s handling of the Northern region amid the ongoing drought, highlighting tensions between the two political figures as the 2027 elections approach.
