Deputy President Kithure Kindiki on Saturday, February 14 appeared to issue a subtle response to the Orange Democratic Movement after party leader Oburu Odinga declared interest in his seat.
Speaking during an impromptu inspection of the Maragwa–Ichagaki–Gamburi road, Kindiki downplayed Oburu’s ambitions, insisting he was not shaken by ODM’s growing political intentions.
He maintained that he would address the matter at the appropriate time, portraying himself as an experienced political strategist who chooses his words carefully.

Tensions between Kindiki and the ODM faction allied to the government became more visible after the party’s delegates’ meeting in Mombasa on February 12.
During the meeting, Oburu Odinga appeared to shift from his earlier stance, having previously indicated he had no issue with Kindiki.
He later clarified that ODM was no longer willing to remain an opposition outfit and was now setting its sights on the deputy president’s seat.
Homa Bay Governor Gladys Wanga also echoed the party’s evolving position during one of the Linda Ground tours, urging ODM to redefine its role and abandon its traditional opposition image.
However, Kindiki’s allies reacted sharply to the remarks, criticising ODM’s growing ambitions and warning against attempts to challenge the current leadership structure.
Maragua MP Mary Wathera was among those who dismissed the party’s intentions, questioning the timing of ODM’s renewed push for the number two position.
The leaders maintained that the presidency and deputy presidency were not open to negotiation or bargaining with any party within the broad-based government.
