During a dedicated weekend, all Ligue 1 clubs customized their jerseys, replacing the usual player names with the phrase “WO=MAN.” This initiative by Ligue 1 and Ligue 2 was aimed at combating sexism in the sport.
In addition to the jerseys, similar inscriptions will be displayed in stadiums and on game balls, as the League emphasized the importance of gender equality both on the field and in the stands.
The measures introduced include a reporting system for sexual and gender-based violence and a procedure for support and protection in case of incidents, which includes post-incident monitoring.
The French league has been working throughout the season to make stadiums safer for women in partnership with three organizations: The Foundation for Inclusive Sport, Her Game Too, and Colossus with Feet of Clay. Six pilot clubs—Toulouse, Rennes, and Auxerre in Ligue 1, and Metz, Paris FC, and Troyes in Ligue 2—are involved in this effort.
“We are committed to ensuring that football matches are safe and enjoyable for all fans, especially women. Sexism and violence are unacceptable,” said Morel, the president of the federation.“
After the weekend, the jerseys will be auctioned on the MatchWornShirt platform, with all proceeds donated to the three partner associations—Foundation pour le Sport Inclusif and Colosse aux Pieds d’Argile—to help combat sexism and sexual violence in football.
Her Game Too is a fan-driven campaign aimed at raising awareness about sexism in sports and was founded in 2021 in the United Kingdom. Her Game Too France followed in 2022. In collaboration with the LFP, they have delivered workshops to all 36 Ligue 1 and Ligue 2 teams.
