Former Independent Policing Oversight Authority (IPOA) Chairperson Macharia Njeru has declared his intention to seek the presidency in the 2027 General Election.
Njeru made the announcement during an interview on Monday, October 5, outlining his experience in both the private and public sectors as one of the factors that would distinguish his candidacy.
The former IPOA chairperson argued that his extensive experience across the two sectors would give him a different background from Kenya’s previous presidents.

He noted that he had spent a significant part of his career working outside government before taking up senior public sector responsibilities.
Njeru also outlined his plans to address government expenditure if elected President, with a particular focus on reducing wastage and limiting unnecessary spending.
He criticised the frequent use of supplementary budgets, arguing that the government could significantly reduce its expenditure without compromising the delivery of essential services or disrupting its operations.
According to Njeru, government ministries, departments and agencies could identify substantial savings by eliminating unnecessary expenditure and improving the management of public resources.
He further argued that reducing government spending would require stronger financial discipline and closer scrutiny of how public funds are allocated and utilised.
Njeru’s presidential bid adds another name to the growing list of politicians and public figures expected to seek the presidency in the 2027 General Election.
The former IPOA chairperson brings experience from both the public and private sectors, having held senior positions in various institutions before joining the public sector.
Njeru served as the founding chairperson of IPOA from 2012 to 2016, overseeing the institution during its formative years after its establishment to provide civilian oversight over the National Police Service.
Before heading IPOA, Njeru served as Vice Chairperson of the Judicial Service Commission (JSC), where he was involved in the administration and oversight of Kenya’s Judiciary.
With his declaration, Njeru joins the field of potential presidential contenders preparing for the 2027 polls, as political activity intensifies ahead of the next General Election.
