Classes Halted at Chebwagan Boys After Student Strike

Barely a week after reopening, Chebwagan Boys High School in Kericho has been closed again following student protests staged on the night of Sunday, January 11.

The unrest forced students to return home as authorities moved to restore order.

Reports indicate that the Kericho County Director of Education ordered the school’s indefinite closure to contain the situation.

The strike was reportedly triggered by students’ frustration over alleged failure by the school administration to maintain proper dietary standards for Form Four candidates who sat the 2025 KCSE exams.

Discontent over the school’s current leadership and poor performance in last year’s national examinations is also said to have contributed to the unrest.

Videos shared online showed students leaving the school with their belongings under police supervision on Monday morning, January 12.

It remains unclear whether any property was damaged during the unrest, though nearby residents reportedly rushed to the school to help calm the situation.

The school administration has yet to issue an official statement on the strike, leaving uncertainty over when learning will resume.

The incident occurred barely a week into the first term, following a long holiday break.
