Two Officers in Custody as IPOA Probes Mukuru Kwa Njenga Shooting

The Independent Policing Oversight Authority (IPOA) has confirmed the arrest and detention of two police officers following the fatal shooting of a 20-year-old Kenyan in Mukuru kwa Njenga in Embakasi.

Appearing before the court on Monday, January 12, 2026, the judge granted IPOA’s request to detain them for 14 days to allow completion of investigations into the incident.

According to IPOA, the shooting occurred at approximately 6:10 a.m. in Imara Daima during an encounter involving the deceased, his colleagues, and police officer

IPOA added that the deceased and two other individuals were delivering a motor vehicle to a client when they were involved in a traffic altercation with a matatu along the route.

After the confrontation, the matatu driver is said to have summoned fellow operators, forcing the three to escape from the scene and seek refuge in a safer area.

According to reports, the vehicle was reportedly parked near Mukuru Community Centre School, after which the three occupants began walking back toward the original accident scene.

Further reports indicate that on their way, the three men were intercepted by two police officers who allegedly ordered them to lie on the ground.

This led to one of the officers allegedly opened fire, hitting the deceased in the head.

The victim succumbed to the injuries on the spot due to their severity.
