Arsenal delivered an impressive performance in Paris, but the harsh reality is that they failed to create the “magic moments” that manager Mikel Arteta had sought, extending their wait for a trophy to five years.
They shocked PSG and their fans with a strong start, but Declan Rice missed a great chance by heading the ball wide, and goalkeeper Gianluigi Donnarumma thwarted their chances of a comeback once again.
Arteta could not have asked for more from his players against a talented PSG team, who had already defeated Manchester City in the league phase and eliminated both Liverpool and Aston Villa in the knockout rounds.
Despite dominating the early stages, Arsenal couldn’t convert their chances into a goal that would have put pressure on a nervous PSG. This left them vulnerable to the threats posed by Luis Enrique’s side.
In fact, Georgian star Khvicha Kvaratskhelia struck the post, and Bradley Barcola forced a fantastic save from goalkeeper David Raya, before Fabian Ruiz finally broke the deadlock.
Arsenal desperately needed a natural striker while they were in control. Emergency striker Mikel Merino served as a focal point but offered little in terms of a genuine attacking threat.
The Arsenal players understandably looked dejected as the Parc des Princes erupted in celebration.
Now, Arteta must lift his team to ensure they finish among the Premier League’s top five and secure a place in the Champions League next season.
