Kirinyaga Governor Anne Waiguru has strongly criticized United Democratic Alliance (UDA) Secretary General Hassan Omar over his recent remarks concerning the Mt Kenya region, accusing him of promoting divisive and ethnic-based politics.
In a statement issued on Sunday, May 24, Waiguru said Omar’s comments amounted to ethnic baiting and warned that such rhetoric risks undermining national unity and cohesion.
She argued that the remarks appeared to isolate the Mt Kenya region from the rest of the country, a situation she described as dangerous and unacceptable in a diverse nation like Kenya.

Waiguru further emphasized that she has consistently opposed ethnic politics regardless of which region it originates from, noting that such narratives only deepen mistrust and division among citizens.
The county boss stressed that political leaders should instead focus on development issues, service delivery, and strengthening national unity rather than engaging in regional antagonism.
The governor also defended the “two-term” political movement, stating that it is a national initiative built on inclusivity and does not promote or condone ethnic hatred.
She maintained that the movement should not be misrepresented or linked to divisive political messaging, as its core objective is to support constitutional democracy and stability.
Waiguru cautioned that inflammatory remarks by political leaders could have long-term negative consequences for the country if not addressed decisively.
The governor went on to note that while such statements may energize political supporters in the short term, they risk harming Kenya’s democratic fabric and social harmony in the long run.
She further called on Hassan Omar to take responsibility for his remarks and issue a public apology to those who may have been offended.
According to her, leadership demands accountability, restraint, and a commitment to national unity, especially when addressing sensitive political and ethnic matters that could easily inflame tensions.
