Opposition leaders under the United Opposition alliance have intensified criticism against the government of William Ruto over the continued rise in fuel prices and the high cost of living affecting many Kenyans across the country.
Speaking at different events locally and abroad on Thursday, the leaders accused the Kenya Kwanza administration of failing to protect citizens from the increasing economic burden and urged Kenyans to reject the proposed Finance Bill 2026.
Addressing supporters in Swindon in the United Kingdom, Democracy for the Citizens Party leader Rigathi Gachagua criticised President Ruto’s administration over the recent fuel price increase claiming corruption within the energy sector had contributed to the current economic situation.
“I can tell you for sure that the fuel prices are as a result of proxy companies used by William Ruto to profit from the Gulf crisis,” said Gachagua
The former Deputy President further claimed that corruption within key sectors of the economy was worsening the financial pressure facing ordinary Kenyans.
“Ruto does not care if Kenyans are suffering. He is overseeing corruption in his government,” Gachagua added.
Back in Kenya, Kalonzo Musyoka also criticised the government during an event in Thika, Kiambu County accusing the administration of failing to cushion Kenyans from the high cost of living and increasing fuel prices.Former Public Service Cabinet Secretary Justin Muturi also blamed what he described as poor leadership for the recent increase in fuel prices saying the government should take responsibility for the economic challenges facing the country.Kalonzo further called on Kenyans to come out in large numbers in June to commemorate Gen Z protesters who died during the 2024 anti Finance Bill demonstrations while urging citizens to oppose the Finance Bill 2026.
At the same time, Democracy for the Citizens Party leader Eugene Wamalwa urged Kenyans to vote out the Kenya Kwanza administration during the 2027 General Election over what he termed poor governance and economic mismanagement.Speaking during a graduation ceremony at Kamuguga Polytechnic in Kabete, Kiambu County, Wamalwa accused the government of failing to address the economic challenges affecting ordinary citizens.
“We shall send this government home for poor governance,” said Wamalwa.
The latest criticism from opposition leaders comes amid growing public concern over the increasing cost of fuel and basic commodities following the recent fuel price adjustments announced by the Energy and Petroleum Regulatory Authority (EPRA).
