Vini Jr snubs Arsenal, signs extension with Real Madrid

Brazilian forward Vinicius Junior has ended speculation over his future by signing a new contract with Real Madrid that will keep him at the Spanish giants until June 30, 2032.

The new deal ends a period of uncertainty around the 26-year-old, whose previous contract was due to expire in June 2027. Premier League champions Arsenal had been closely monitoring his situation and were reported to have made him a major target as they looked to strengthen their attack.

Vinicius’ decision to remain at the Santiago Bernabeu represents a major boost for Real Madrid, who have secured the services of one of their most influential attacking players for the next six seasons.

The Brazilian joined Real Madrid from Flamengo in 2018 at the age of 18 and has since developed into one of the club’s leading stars. According to the club, he has made 375 appearances, scored 128 goals and won 14 trophies during his eight years in Madrid.

His honours include two Champions League titles, three Club World Cups, three La Liga titles, two European Super Cups, one Copa del Rey and three Spanish Super Cups. He also played a decisive role in Madrid’s Champions League triumphs in 2022 and 2024, scoring in both finals.

Vinicius’ has also collected several individual awards during his Madrid career. Real Madrid highlighted his 2024 The Best FIFA Men’s Player award, the Golden Ball at the 2024 Intercontinental Cup and the UEFA Champions League Player of the Season award for the 2023/24 campaign.

The contract announcement comes after weeks of intense speculation over a possible move to England. Sky Sports reported that Arsenal were closely monitoring negotiations because Vinícius had entered the final two years of his previous agreement.

The Guardian also reported that Arsenal’s interest had made the Brazilian’s future one of the major transfer stories of the summer, but Real Madrid ultimately succeeded in keeping their star forward.

For Arsenal, the development brings an end to hopes of signing one of the world’s most dangerous wingers. The London club will now have to turn its attention to alternative attacking targets as preparations continue for the new Premier League season.

For Real Madrid, meanwhile, retaining Vinicius’ represents a statement of intent. The Brazilian remains an important part of the club’s long-term project and will continue alongside the team’s other attacking stars as Madrid look to compete for major domestic and European honours.

Vinicius’ new commitment also means Madrid have avoided the possibility of losing a player who has become central to their recent success, while the Brazilian gets the opportunity to continue his career at the club where he has established himself as a global star.
