The United States (US) has frozen more than Ksh 1.7 billion funding for the Kenya-led Multinational Security Mision in Haiti.

This followed the 47th President of United States, Donald Trump’s 90-day foreign aid suspension.

The new development was confirmed by the United Nations Spokesperson Stephane Dujarric.

The announcement was made just hours after a military contingent 70 soldiers from El Salvador arrived in Haiti.

The troop joined more than 600 Kenya police officers backed by police and soldiers from other countries including Jamaica and Guatemala.

Speaking to the press, Stephane stated that they had received an official statement from the US asking for an immediate stop work order on their contribution.

We received an official notification from the US asking for an immediate stop work order on their contribution to the trust fund for the Multinational Security Support Mission (MMS) mission.

Stephane said.

The UN had committed $15 million to the trust fund; $ 1.7 million of that had already been spent, so $13.3 million is already frozen.

She added.

The Multinational security mission is not a United Nations force but entirely depends on voluntarily funds to finance it.

So far, $110 million had been raised with the security mission making little progress to restore order in Haiti.

More money, equipment’s and personnel are still needed for the international force.

If not, reports indicate that Haiti’s capital could become overrun by gangs if the international community will not set up aid for the security mission.
