U.S. Embassy Sheds Light on Military Aircraft Landing in Mombasa

The United States Embassy in Nairobi has sought to clear the air over the recent sighting of a U.S. military aircraft flying into Mombasa Port.

In a statement issued on Monday, September 28, the embassy explained that the aircraft was returning to the United States for maintenance after completing counterterrorism operations in the region.

The mission, according to the embassy, was part of routine procedures that follow the conclusion of such operations and did not indicate any new or ongoing military activity in Kenya.

The clarification came after the unusual presence of the military plane at the busy coastal port drew public attention and raised questions among observers.

“Thanks to the Kenya Ports Authority for their support as U.S. aircraft head back to the U.S. for maintenance after supporting counterterrorism operations,” the embassy said.

The United States has maintained longstanding military cooperation with Kenya, particularly in the fight against terrorism in the Horn of Africa.

Notably, this comes weeks after the United States government urged foreigners planning to attend the 2026 FIFA World Cup to begin their visa applications.

In a statement on September 3, the U.S. Department of State Consular Affairs said embassies and consulates are working around the clock to ensure an efficient and smooth visa process.
