Tourist Rescued After Falling Into Mt Longonot Crater

A multi-agency team has successfully rescued a visitor who slipped and fell into the Mt Longonot Crater on Saturday, November 29.

In a statement issued on Monday, December 1, the Kenya Wildlife Service (KWS) said the man, identified as Bildad Simiyu, landed on a rock ledge where rescuers struggled for hours to reach him.

KWS officers, who were the first to respond, were eventually forced to suspend the rescue due to nightfall.

Despite halting physical efforts, the team remained at the crater rim, maintaining constant communication with Simiyu, reassuring him, and monitoring his condition throughout the night.

At sunrise on Sunday, KWS joined the Kenya Red Cross, Nakuru Fire Brigade, the National Police Service, and ITARC Hospital to resume the search for Simiyu.

The team reached him and successfully pulled him from the crater at about 3:00 PM.

Simiyu suffered a fracture in his left leg and was taken to Naivasha County Referral Hospital for treatment.

The incident comes months after KWS rescued a family of four who went missing in Tsavo East National Park.

After a 24-hour search involving aircraft and ground teams, the family was found near Kabaguchi Ranger Camp in good health.
