Thai National Convicted, Jailed for Trafficking 2kg of Cocaine

A Thai national has been sentenced to 27 years in prison after being convicted of trafficking 2,092 grams of cocaine worth Ksh8.36 million.

In a statement issued on Thursday, February 19, the Office of the Director of Public Prosecutions (ODPP) said the accused, Netima Ngamsap, was sentenced by Senior Principal Magistrate Irene Gichobi at the JKIA Law Courts.

The prosecution told the court that the drugs were concealed in a false bottom of a grey suitcase, an offence under the Narcotic Drugs and Psychotropic Substances (Control) Act.

“Netima Ngamsap was charged and found guilty of trafficking 2,092 grams of cocaine valued at Ksh8,368,000. The court heard that the drugs were concealed in a false bottom of a grey suitcase, contrary to the provisions of the Narcotic Drugs and Psychotropic Substances (Control) Act,” read the statement in part.

During the hearing, the prosecution called eleven witnesses whose testimonies were described as clear and consistent in linking the accused to the offence.

Netima Ngamsap was represented by defence counsel and was assisted by a professional Thai interpreter throughout the proceedings to ensure a fair trial.

Following the conviction and sentencing, the court advised the accused of the right to appeal against both the conviction and the sentence within 14 days.

The case comes amid heightened scrutiny of drug trafficking incidents in the country. Just weeks ago, eight Kenya Defence Forces (KDF) soldiers were charged at the Mombasa Law Courts with trafficking methamphetamine valued at over Ksh192 million.

The soldiers appeared before Senior Principal Magistrate Gladys Olimo and denied the charges.

The eight suspects were identified as Duke Nyamwaya Nyarige, Juma Mwinyifaki Juma, Michael Peter Kariuki, Elijah Mbogo, James Ekiru, Abdulrehman Salad Jara, Abdirahman Abdi Kuno, and Peter Kipng’etich Tonui.

According to the ODPP, prosecutors informed the court that the suspects were found with varying quantities of methamphetamine, with both individual and joint charges highlighting the scale and complexity of the alleged trafficking operation.

Investigators further alleged that the group had diverted 35 kilograms of methamphetamine that had been seized from Iranian nationals on October 25, 2025.
