Tense Madrid Derby Ends in a Stalemate

Real Madrid remains one point clear of second-placed Atletico Madrid at the top of La Liga after the two sides played out another tense 1-1 draw in their highly-anticipated derby at Santiago Bernabeu.

The derby started on a moderate tempo as Atletico played calmly with much tactical discipline while Real, on the other hand, tried as much as possible to penetrate and find an opener.

Julian Alvarez put Atleti ahead with that one shot on target from the spot after a penalty was awarded controversially in the 30th minute.

Ancelotti put his head in his hands after the video assistant referee called his on-field counterpart to look at an incident on the pitchside monitor involving Madrid’s Aurelien Tchouameni and Atletico forward Samual Lino despite play being allowed to continue.

After the VAR check, the referee decided Tchouameni had trodden on Lino’s foot and committed a foul.

Julian Alvarez stepped up and scored from the resulting spot-kick to put Atletico 1-0 up before half-time.

Within 5 minutes into the second half, Kylian Mbappe equalised to get Madrid back on track.

Despite completely dominating the second half, Ancelotti’s men were unable to find the lead, thanks to an inspired performance from Jan Oblak in goal for Atletico.

Madrid stays top of the LaLiga standings, still one point clear of Diego Simeone’s side in second, but Barcelona is lurking in third and will be only one point off Madrid and two from Atletico should it win against Sevilla when they play on Monday.
