The Director of Public Prosecutions (DPP) has charged a Lamu-based Madrasa teacher with defiling a four-year-old girl.
In a statement issued by the ODPP, the accused, 22-year-old Sharif Hussein, popularly known as Ustadhi, was arraigned before the Lamu Law Courts, where he faced charges of defilement.
Hussein faces an alternative count of committing an indecent act with a child.
The court heard that the offence was committed in September 2025 at the Utukuni area, Mkomani Location, Lamu Island, Central Sub-County.

He is alleged to have intentionally and unlawfully penetrated the minor in acts which the DPP described as heinous and unacceptable in any civilized society.
Hussein was brought before Principal Magistrate Hon. Peter Wasike, where he faced the court to answer to charges of defilement.
Standing in the dock, he entered a not guilty plea to both counts and, through his advocate, made an earnest request to be released on bond under reasonable terms.
His lawyer submitted that bail was a constitutional right and that the accused was ready to abide by any conditions the court might impose.
But the prosecution immediately pushed back. Prosecution Counsel Idris Kipruto Tumno, representing the DPP, launched a strong objection to the request.
He told the court that the release of the accused would not only jeopardize the ongoing investigations but also expose witnesses to possible intimidation or manipulation.
Tumno stressed that the complainant, being a vulnerable four-year-old child, needed to be protected from any form of interference to safeguard the integrity of the proceedings.
