SHA Picks New Assistant Director for Communications

The Social Health Authority (SHA) has appointed Winfred Nduku Nthiani as its new Assistant Director for Corporate Communication.

In a statement released on Thursday, June 4, the authority confirmed that her appointment followed a competitive recruitment process that had been ongoing for several months.

“The Social Health Authority (SHA) Board is pleased to announce the appointment of Winfred Nduku Nthiani as Assistant Director, Corporate Communication. This appointment follows a competitive and transparent recruitment process that began on 29th July, 2025,” the statement read.

The appointment comes amid ongoing scrutiny over alleged ethnic imbalance within the authority. SHA has previously defended its hiring practices, insisting that its recruitment process is guided by principles of inclusivity and national diversity.

Appearing before the Senate Standing Committee on National Cohesion, Equal Opportunity and Regional Integration on March 24, SHA Chief Executive Officer Mercy Mwangangi stated that the organisation adheres to fair employment standards and ensures representation from across the country.

In a report presented to the committee, SHA noted that its workforce comprises employees from about 40 ethnic communities, with no single group exceeding the one-third threshold as required under the National Cohesion and Integration Act.

The data showed the largest representation coming from the Kalenjin community (17.7%), followed by Somali (14.0%), Kikuyu (12.1%), and Kamba (10.5%). Other groups, including Kisii (6.4%), as well as Luhya and Luo communities (each at 7.8%), are also represented, alongside smaller and minority groups.

SHA maintained that its diverse staffing structure is intended to promote fairness, strengthen public confidence, and ensure the institution reflects Kenya’s social diversity.
