SHA Extends HMIS Compliance Deadline for Healthcare Providers

The Social Health Authority (SHA) has granted healthcare providers an additional month to meet the Health Management Information System (HMIS) compliance requirements, pushing the deadline to September 30, 2026.

In an announcement on Tuesday, September 1, SHA CEO Mercy Mwangangi confirmed the one-month extension, explaining that it would give providers more time to complete necessary system configuration and compliance processes.

She urged all healthcare facilities to use the extended period wisely to ensure they achieve full compliance within the revised timeline.

The SHA CEO also encouraged providers experiencing technical or system-related difficulties to reach out to the Digital Health Agency’s (DHA) Technical Support team for assistance and resolution.

The authority had previously announced on June 30 that HMIS compliance would be a strict requirement for the 2026/28 contracting cycle.

SHA also warned that the current Provider Portal would be progressively phased out and eventually shut down completely as part of a broader push toward digital integration across the healthcare sector.

According to SHA, the transition is intended to enhance service delivery and prevent disruptions in claims management and patient care.

All healthcare facilities will be required to maintain compliant systems capable of integrating with national health platforms. Furthermore, all HMIS platforms must receive certification from the Digital Health Agency, in line with the Digital Health Act.

The authority highlighted that the shift to integrated HMIS systems would strengthen efforts to detect and prevent fraud, waste, and abuse through advanced data analytics.

Additionally, the system is expected to improve tracking of benefit utilization, patient outcomes, and provider performance.

This data will also support quality assurance, planning, budgeting, and sustainability assessments across all SHA funds.
