The government has approved compensation for 157 additional victims of human rights violations linked to demonstrations and public protests, bringing the total amount disbursed so far to KSh674.1 million.
In a statement issued on Friday, July 3, the Panel of Experts on Compensation of Victims of Human Rights Violations, chaired by Prof.
Makau Mutua, announced that KSh225.4 million has been released under the second phase of the compensation programme.

According to the panel, the latest beneficiaries comprise 57 families of deceased victims and 100 people who sustained injuries.
The claims form part of more than 400 applications received over the past two weeks.
Mutua said every approved claim underwent a rigorous verification process to ensure only eligible victims received compensation.
Under the payment structure, the families of the 57 deceased victims will each receive KSh3 million, while 19 victims with severe injuries will be paid KSh1 million each.
Additionally, 57 victims with moderate injuries will receive KSh500,000 each, while 18 victims with minor injuries will be compensated KSh50,000 each.
The panel also approved compensation for six victims of aggravated sexual offences, with each set to receive KSh6 million.
Mutua said the full list of beneficiaries will be published once the compensation exercise is complete to uphold accountability and transparency.
He also urged victims who have not yet submitted claims, provided consent, or shared their banking details to do so promptly to facilitate payment.
Besides financial compensation, the panel noted that psychological support services remain available to victims requiring emotional and mental health assistance.
The latest disbursement follows the first phase announced last week, during which 348 victims of human rights violations linked to demonstrations held between 2013 and 2025 received KSh448.7 million in compensation.
