Ruto Responds to Backlash Over Githurai Business Demolitions

President William Ruto has responded to criticism following protests sparked by the demolition of business structures in Githurai, distancing himself from the blame.

On February 18, the Kenya National Highways Authority (KeNHA) deployed heavy machinery to remove structures said to have encroached on the road reserve.

The move followed a January 9 notice directing roadside traders operating on both sides of Roysambu and along the Nairobi-bound lane at Githurai to vacate the designated corridor.

KeNHA maintained that the operation was intended to pave the way for the construction of bus bays to streamline public transport and ease traffic congestion.

Speaking during a church service on Sunday, February 22, Kimani Wamatangi appeared to fault the national government, suggesting that traders’ concerns had not been adequately addressed prior to the demolitions.

Governor Kimani Wamatangi argued that the situation could have been managed more effectively had the Kenya National Highways Authority engaged traders in consultations to reach an amicable solution.

Addressing the same church service, President William Ruto rejected claims that the national government was solely responsible, stating that all elected leaders in the affected area had defined mandates, which may

Ruto appeared to rebuke Kimani Wamatangi and other local leaders who had criticised the national government over the Githurai demolitions.

Addressing congregants, Ruto urged leaders to avoid apportioning blame and instead focus on finding solutions, maintaining that responsibility for addressing local challenges is shared among all elected officials on the ground.

He emphasised that the concerns affecting Kiambu residents  and Kenyans more broadly require collective leadership.

According to the president, the county has a full complement of elected representatives, from MCAs and MPs to the senator, woman representative, governor and president, all of whom bear responsibility for resolving emerging issues.

The Head of State reiterated that he would not shoulder blame for matters that could have been addressed by leaders serving at the local level, noting that they are members of the same political outfit.
