JCM Church Pastor Resigns, Cites Political Meddling

A cleric affiliated with the Jesus Compassion Ministry (JCM) has stepped down from his role, citing concerns over political interference within the church.

Charles Wachira, who headed the ministry’s United States branch prior to his resignation, relinquished his position after the Nairobi-based headquarters invited President William Ruto to its third anniversary celebration.

The President had been scheduled to attend a special service on Sunday, February 22.

Wachira expressed opposition to the invitation, arguing that it was inconsistent with the sentiments of some congregants who have criticised alleged excesses by operatives of the current administration against young Kenyans.

He maintained that hosting the Head of State under the circumstances would undermine the church’s commitment to justice and solidarity with the oppressed.

Wachira stated that he would not associate himself with any effort aimed at sanitising individuals perceived to have acted against the broader interests of the country.

He argued that when leadership decisions generate confusion, division or moral unease among congregants, taking a principled position becomes inevitable.

The church is led by Bishop Benson Kiengei.

A promotional poster announcing President William Ruto’s visit sparked widespread debate online, with many linking the development to the prevailing political climate.

Critics of the planned visit claimed the resident bishop was aligned with the state and was leveraging the pulpit for interests beyond spiritual guidance.

In response, some members indicated they would boycott the service, while others declared their decision to leave the church altogether.
