Pwani University has indefinitely suspended all learning activities after six weeks of disruption caused by an ongoing staff strike.
In a notice issued on Tuesday, November 4, the University Senate said the decision was made during a special meeting held earlier in the day, effectively halting academic programmes for the First Semester of the 2025/2026 Academic Year.
An internal memo signed by the Acting Registrar for Academic and Student Affairs stated that the suspension takes immediate effect and directed students to vacate the university premises by Wednesday, November 5, 2025.

The university management has moreover urged students to make necessary arrangements to leave the campus within the stipulated timeline.
It also emphasizes that further updates will be communicated through the University Website, Students’ Portal, and other official communication channels.
Pwani University’s move follows similar shutdowns in public universities nationwide, as strikes by staff continue to disrupt higher education operations.
Other universities that have recently suspended learning include Karatina University, which closed indefinitely except for its School of Health Sciences, and Jomo Kenyatta University of Agriculture and Technology (JKUAT), which temporarily halted academic activities while exempting certain categories of students, including medical students on clinical rotations and those in specialized programs.
