Kenya Sugar Board Sets 14-Day Deadline for Re-packagers

The Kenya Sugar Board has given all sugar re-packaging firms a two-week ultimatum to register with the regulator.

In a notice issued on Tuesday, November 4, the agency said the directive seeks to enhance compliance with quality standards and improve product traceability across the sugar sector.

To enhance compliance, the agency announced a mandatory online registration process for all entities involved in sugar re-packaging.

Through the IMIS portal, applicants must provide all required documents, as prescribed in the Regulations, to complete registration.

The directive follows the Ministry of Agriculture’s rollout of the Sugar Development Levy, which took effect on July 1.

Under the new policy, millers are required to pay a 4% levy on both locally produced and imported sugar, with payments due by the tenth day of the following month.

The Kenya Revenue Authority (KRA) has been appointed as the collection agent.

The levy, expected to raise about Ksh4 billion annually, will fund cane development, mill rehabilitation, infrastructure, research, and farmer support programs.
