PSG Overturn First Leg Defeat to Beat Liverpool on Penalties

Paris Saint-Germain emerged victorious in a thrilling penalty shootout at Anfield, eliminating Liverpool from the competition after a 1-0 win on the night.

Gianluigi Donnarumma made two crucial saves, stopping efforts from Darwin Nunez and Curtis Jones, while PSG successfully converted all of their penalties following an intense 120 minutes of play.

Ousmane Dembele opened the scoring for PSG just 12 minutes into the match, scrambling the ball home after excellent work from Bradley Barcola.

The game was played at an incredibly high pace, with Barcola coming close to adding a second goal, only to be denied by Liverpool’s goalkeeper, Alisson Becker. Alisson also had to show his skills, coming off his line to prevent Dembele from scoring again when the winger’s touch went slightly too long.

At the other end, Liverpool aimed to create chances but were often thwarted by a poor final ball, with Mohamed Salah appearing slightly out of sync with his teammates.

After the break, Liverpool increased their intensity and dominated the second half, but Donnarumma made several key saves to thwart their efforts. Jarell Quansah nearly equalized in the 79th minute with a header that hit the post following an Andy Robertson free kick.

Despite Liverpool’s superior performance, similar to PSG’s recent struggles, they were unable to convert their chances into goals.

Liverpool had the advantage in the first period of extra time but failed to force a save from Donnarumma, while PSG looked stronger in the final 15 minutes, with Alisson making a fine save to deny Dembele.

As a result, PSG will advance to face either Aston Villa or Club Brugge.
