Protests Erupt in Haiti Over Planned Exit of Kenyan Police Forces

Haitian citizens have started following the Kenyan soldiers who are set to leave the country and return home to Kenya after completing their mission in the Caribbean country.

The move was motivated by an attempt to prevent the officers from leaving Petite Riviere and Pont-Sonde.

According to reports, the demonstrations were caused by fears that the withdrawal of the Kenyan-led contingent would leave them exposed to gang violence.

Further reports saw scenes of residents erecting roadblocks and gathering in large numbers.

Haitians were seen at the gate of what looked like the area the Kenyan officers were trying to access, as the police moved around trying to control the situation.

In response to the matter, the authorities deployed helicopters to evacuate officers from the area, as protesters barricaded roads.

The protests reportedly came days after jubilations filled Haiti’s capital in what was translated as a celebration after Kenya announced it would withdraw its officers from the country.

The development brought mixed reactions as some were seen celebrating the withdrawal, while others are protesting against the same.

Kenyan officers in Haiti concluded their mission with contingents starting to return home in mid-March.

Those who remained were set to return recently before being blocked.
