Pressure is mounting on Gor Mahia head coach Charles Akonnor after the Kenyan champions suffered a 3-1 defeat to Tusker FC in the FKF Super Cup at Nyayo National Stadium on Sunday.
Tusker, who won the FKF Cup last season, took control of the match with two goals in quick succession during the first half. Francis Oduor opened the scoring before Eugene Ikutwa doubled the Brewers’ advantage.
Gor Mahia were handed a lifeline before the break when Ikutwa turned the ball into his own net, reducing the deficit to 2-1.
However, the defending league champions were unable to complete the comeback, with Ian Simiyu restoring Tusker’s two-goal advantage in the second half to seal a 3-1 victory and hand the Brewers the first silverware of the 2026/27 season.
Akonnor admitted after the match that mistakes had cost his side dearly. Speaking after the defeat, the Gor Mahia coach described the errors as “funny” and said his team needed to learn from the experience.
The defeat is another setback for Gor Mahia after they also lost the CECAFA Kagame Cup final 2-1 to Rwanda’s Rayon Sports earlier this month.
Gor Mahia are entering the new campaign as defending FKF Premier League champions after winning a record-extending 22nd league title last season. They will also compete in the CAF Champions League, adding pressure on the team to improve before their competitive schedule intensifies.
For Akonnor, the immediate task will be to address the defensive mistakes exposed against Tusker and restore confidence within the squad before the start of the FKF Premier League season.
The Super Cup defeat also handed Tusker an early psychological advantage over their rivals. The Brewers’ victory was their fourth FKF Super Cup title, giving them an early boost ahead of the new domestic campaign.
Gor Mahia will now have to regroup quickly, with the new season approaching and the club facing both domestic and continental commitments.
For Akonnor, the coming fixtures will provide an opportunity to respond to the growing scrutiny and prove that the Super Cup setback was only an early stumble rather than the beginning of a difficult campaign.
