The Ethics and Anti-Corruption Commission (EACC) has apprehended a Busia Law Courts clerk over a Ksh180,000 bribery scheme linked to a pending criminal case.
The August 24 arrest stems from claims that the clerk demanded Ksh180,000 on behalf of a presiding Magistrate, allegedly to secure a lenient ruling for an accused person facing trial.
“The Ethics and Anti-Corruption Commission (EACC) has arrested a Court Clerk attached to the Busia Law Courts for allegedly demanding and receiving a KES 180,000 bribe to influence the outcome of a criminal case pending before the Court,β EACC stated.
According to the Commission, the accused person and six co-accused persons were reportedly targeted for the payoff, with the promise of a softer outcome once judgment was delivered.
EACC detectives moved in swiftly once the bribe demand was reported, setting up a sting operation to catch the suspect in the act.
The clerk was arrested shortly after allegedly receiving the full Ksh180,000, which investigators say had been marked ahead of the operation.
The suspect was taken into custody and is currently being held at the EACCβs Western Regional Office in Bungoma as processing continues.
