President Ruto Marks Madaraka Day with Historic Visit to Wajir

President William Ruto has arrived at Wajir stadium for the 2026 Madaraka Day celebrations.

This marks the first time the national event is being held in Kenya’s North Eastern region.

The President reportedly arrived at the stadium moments after 8 am to lead the national celebrations being held at the newly constructed Wajir Stadium.

According to reports, this year’s Madaraka Day celebrations will be held under the theme, “Education, Skills and the Future,” with the government saying the event will focus on learning, innovation and skills development.

This marks the first time in which Wajir is hosting the celebrations.

According to the government, the move reflects it’s commitment to inclusive development and national integration.

Thousands of guests, leaders and residents are attending the celebrations at the 10,000-seater Wajir Stadium.

Ahead of the event, President Ruto on Sunday commissioned several development projects in Wajir, including electricity connectivity programmes and infrastructure projects aimed at opening up the region.

The government has also undertaken major upgrades in Wajir Town, including road works, street lighting, water connections and renovations at Wajir International Airport in preparation for the national event.
