President Ruto Dismisses Allegations of 20-Year Term Ambition

President William Ruto has dismissed claims that he plans to extend the presidential term limit to serve for 20 years.

Speaking on Tuesday, December 2, at State House, Nairobi, he described the presidency as a demanding role and said he is looking forward to the day he will hand over power to a successor.

Ruto called the reports baseless and reiterated that he has no intention of remaining in office beyond his constitutional term.

The claims arose after President Ruto, on Friday, November 28, raised a hypothetical question about the impact of continuing the affordable housing programme for the next 20 years, which some social media users interpreted as a signal that he intended to extend his term in office.

This is the second time President Ruto has dismissed plans to extend the presidential term limit.

In November 2022, he emphasized that he would not support any constitutional changes to extend his tenure, underscoring the importance of prioritizing the people’s interests over personal gain.

The idea to amend the constitution and remove the presidential term limit was first proposed by Fafi MP Yakub Salah.

The proposal faced widespread criticism from Kenyans, who viewed it as retrogressive.

The UDA party also distanced itself from Salah’s suggestion, stating that his view does not reflect the party’s position.
