Pope Francis, who has been in hospital for more than two weeks, suffered two episodes of “acute respiratory failure” on Monday.
According to a Vatican statement, the crises were caused by a significant accumulation of endobronchial mucus, which led to bronchospasm.
“Today, the Holy Father suffered two episodes of acute respiratory insufficiency, caused by a significant accumulation of endobronchial mucus and consequent bronchospasm,” the Vatican noted.

Pope underwent two bronchoscopies and doctors removed a buildup of secretions and in the afternoon, Francis was given oxygen through a mask to help with his breathing.
“Two bronchoscopies were therefore performed, requiring aspiration of abundant secretions. In the afternoon, non-invasive mechanical ventilation was resumed.”
The Vatican moreover reassured that Pope remained vigilant, oriented, and collaborative.
However, his prognosis remains guarded as he continues to receive treatment at Rome’s Gemelli Hospital.
Pope Francis has been hospitalized at Rome’s Gemelli Hospital since mid-February, where he has been battling double pneumonia.
He was first treated for bronchitis before being diagnosed with pneumonia in both lungs.
