Victor Osimhen scored twice as Nigeria defeated Rwanda 2-0 in their World Cup qualifier at Amahoro Stadium on Friday evening.
This victory was crucial for the Super Eagles, who have climbed to fourth place in Group C standings, enhancing their chances of qualifying for the international tournament scheduled to take place in North America in 2026.
This match marked the first time the three-time African champions defeated the Amavubi in Kigali out of four attempts.
Nigeria dominated possession from the kickoff, controlling the pace of play throughout the match. Their first goal came early in the 11th minute when Ademola Lookman delivered a precise free kick from the wing, allowing Osimhen to finish from close range.
The partnership between Lookman and Osimhen continually troubled the Rwandan defense throughout the first half.
Osimhen completed his brace just before halftime by skillfully chipping the ball over Rwandan goalkeeper Fiacre Ntwari after beating the last defender. Despite creating numerous opportunities in the second half, Nigeria couldn’t extend their lead further, as the Rwandan defense held firm to prevent additional goals.
Rwanda showed occasional glimpses of attacking intent, with Bonheur Mugisha forcing Nigeria’s goalkeeper Stanley Nwabali into action in the 53rd minute. However, the home team struggled to maintain consistent pressure against a disciplined Nigerian defense, which effectively protected their two-goal advantage until the final whistle.
