ODM Ends Edwin Sifuna’s Tenure as Secretary-General

The Orange Democratic Movement (ODM) has removed Nairobi Senator Edwin Sifuna from his position as the party’s Secretary-General following a resolution adopted by the party’s National Executive Committee (NEC).

In a statement issued on Monday, June 22, the party said the decision followed the adoption of recommendations by its Internal Disputes Resolution Committee (IDRC), which had been tasked with hearing a complaint against Sifuna in accordance with the party constitution.

According to ODM, the NEC unanimously endorsed the committee’s findings, effectively ending Sifuna’s tenure as the party’s Secretary-General.

The decision follows months of legal and internal wrangles, during which Sifuna repeatedly sought the intervention of the Political Parties Disputes Tribunal (PPDT) to stop disciplinary proceedings against him.

ODM said Sifuna initially secured orders from the tribunal barring the party from taking disciplinary action.

However, the orders were vacated on March 26, 2026, allowing the party’s internal disciplinary process to proceed.

After the Internal Disputes Resolution Mechanism (IDRM) began hearing the matter, Sifuna again moved to the PPDT in an attempt to halt the proceedings.

On April 9, 2026, the tribunal ruled that ODM could continue with the disciplinary process but directed that any decision reached should not be communicated or implemented until the application challenging the proceedings had been determined.

The party further stated that Sifuna was invited to appear before the disciplinary committee and was granted several adjournments, in addition to requests for further particulars on the allegations against him.

However, when the matter came up for hearing on April 20, 2026, Sifuna did not appear before the committee.

His lead counsel, Senior Counsel Isaac Okero, instead informed the panel that his client would not participate, citing concerns over alleged bias within the committee.

The committee subsequently proceeded with the hearing in Sifuna’s absence.

ODM also noted that the PPDT later dismissed Sifuna’s complaint, finding that the issues he had raised were best addressed through the party’s internal dispute resolution mechanisms.

The party wished Sifuna well in his future political and professional engagements following his removal.

Sifuna’s removal comes just days after he was dropped from the Senate Committee on Energy during the reconstitution of several standing committees.

The changes were approved through a motion tabled in the Senate on June 17 by Senate Majority Leader Aaron Cheruiyot.
