Darwin Nunez played a pivotal role in Liverpool’s 3-1 comeback victory over Southampton at Anfield, scoring a goal and winning a penalty while also surviving a VAR review for a potential red card. With this win, Liverpool extended their lead at the top of the table to 16 points.
In first-half injury time, Nunez aimed a kick at Kyle Walker-Peters but received only a yellow card from referee Lewis Smith, who was officiating his sixth Premier League game. VAR official Derek Eaton subsequently determined that there was no clear and obvious error in the referee’s decision.
Southampton started the match strongly and took the lead when Will Smallbone scored after a mix-up between Liverpool’s goalkeeper Alisson and defender Virgil Van Dijk. This goal occurred just moments before Nunez’s incident.
However, Nunez equalized for Liverpool six minutes into the second half, slotting the ball home after Luis Diaz skillfully created space against Walker-Peters on the wing.
Southampton’s fortunes quickly turned for the worse when Smallbone fouled Nunez in the penalty area just two minutes later, giving Liverpool a chance to take the lead. Mohamed Salah confidently converted the penalty, marking his 26th goal in 29 Premier League matches this season. He later added another goal from the spot after Yukinari Sugawara handled the ball, bringing his tally to 27.
This victory solidified Liverpool’s position at the top of the table, while Southampton was left to ponder what might have happened had Nunez been sent off.
