The National Transport and Safety Authority (NTSA) has listed seven road safety violations motorists will be targeted for in its renewed enforcement campaign after detaining 13 vehicles on Wednesday night.
In an update, the authority said the violations were identified during a night-time safety compliance operation conducted by a multi-agency team along the Southern Bypass the night prior.
“Last night, the inter-agency team conducted a safety compliance check along the Southern Bypass, during which thirteen (13) motor vehicles were detained,” NTSA stated.
The violations listed included driving under the influence of alcohol, operating vehicles with expired driving licences, using vehicles with expired inspection stickers, driving without insurance, contravening insurance terms, broken headlights and cracked windscreens
Among the safety rules are mandatory vehicle inspections, valid driver documentation, and checks that target drunk driving as part of a nationwide campaign to reduce road accidents.
NTSA further explained that night-time checks are a priority because evening and late-night hours are among the most dangerous periods on the road, requiring increased enforcement to address risky driving behaviour.
Additionally, the authority requires motorists to ensure their vehicles have valid inspection stickers and insurance, while drivers must hold valid driving licences and, where applicable, Public Service Vehicle (PSV) badges.
