All school transport vehicles will be required to present their vehicles for a mandatory inspection.
This comes after the National Transport and Safety Authority (NTSA) announced fresh nationwide safety checks as learners return for the second term.
In a statement, NTSA issued new orders stating that the inspections are aimed at ensuring that school buses and vans are mechanically sound and safe for transporting children during the back-to-school period.
According to the authority, the directive is part of the wider Watoto Wafike Salama initiative.
This has been intensified to guarantee the safe transport of learners as schools reopen.
“All school transport operators are expected to present their fleets for inspection to confirm that the vehicles are mechanically sound and safe for transporting children,” NTSA statement read.
NTSA also announced that a multi-agency team will heighten strict road safety compliance checks across the country, urging all motorists to exercise high levels of responsibility while on the roads.
Additionally, the authority has called on parents, school administrations, and transport operators to prioritize children’s safety during the school reopening period.
“We call on parents, school administrations, and school transport operators to prioritise the safety of our children during this period,” it added.
The statement follows a fatal crash along the Narok-Mahi Mahiu road, claiming seven lives on the spot.
The incident that occurred between Ntulele and Duka Moja involved a trailer and a Toyota Voxy, an accident that left all occupants of the Voxy dead on the spot.
