NTSA Clarifies New Vehicle Inspection Rules

The National Transport and Safety Authority (NTSA) has issued a major clarification on the implementation and enforcement of newly introduced vehicle inspection requirements.

In an update on Sunday, June 28, the authority said the clarification follows an earlier notice outlining inspection requirements for various categories of motor vehicles.

NTSA announced that school transport operators will not face penalties for failing to comply with the newly introduced requirements on reflective red stop mechanical signal arms and telematics systems under the Traffic (School Transport) Rules, 2026.

The measures are intended to enhance the safety of school transport and improve vehicle monitoring.

The authority also stated that operators of commercial service vehicles will not be penalised for failing to install telematics systems as required under the NTSA (Operations of Commercial Vehicles) Regulations, 2026.

In addition, NTSA clarified that private motorists will not be required to produce proof of mandatory vehicle inspection during routine road checks conducted by traffic officers, meaning the inspection requirement will not be enforced through roadside inspections.

The authority further cautioned members of the public against relying on misinformation circulating online regarding the new inspection requirements.

It urged motorists and vehicle owners to verify all information through NTSA’s official communication channels to avoid being misled.

NTSA added that details on the implementation and enforcement of the affected regulations will be communicated at a later date, assuring stakeholders that further guidance will be provided before the provisions take effect.
