Chief Justice Martha Koome has presided over the swearing-in of the new Chairperson and Commissioners of the National Land Commission (NLC).
The ceremony, held on Monday, March 23, marked the official start of a six-year term for the new team, which is mandated to manage public land, advise on land policy, and address historical land injustices under the Constitution.
Koome congratulated the newly appointed Chairperson, Dr. Abdillahi Saggaf Alawy, alongside the commissioners, as they assume office at a time when land issues remain central to the country’s historical, social, and economic landscape.

She emphasized the significance of their role, noting that the commission’s work will be critical in shaping land governance and addressing long-standing challenges in the sector.
Koome further urged the Commission to remain firmly guided by constitutional principles in the execution of its mandate.
She emphasized the need for integrity, transparency, and accountability, noting that the responsibility of resolving long-standing land disputes and strengthening governance frameworks will require courage, independence, and a strong commitment to the rule of law.
On his part, newly sworn-in Chairperson Abdillahi Saggaf Alawy acknowledged the weight of responsibility placed on the commission and the high expectations from Kenyans.
He noted that land remains one of the country’s most significant and sensitive resources, touching on livelihoods, development, investment, environmental sustainability, and social justice.
Alawy emphasized that the mandate entrusted to the commission is both profound and critical, underscoring the importance of handling land matters with utmost care and responsibility.
Moreover, NLC CEO Kabale Tache Arero expressed confidence in the newly appointed leadership, noting that their expertise and experience would strengthen the commission’s ability to deliver on its constitutional mandate.
The team of newly sworn-in commissioners includes Susan Oyatsi, MBS, Daniel Murithi Muriungi, Kigen Vincent Cheruiyot, Julie Ouma Oseko, Mohamed Abdi Mohamed, and Mary Yiane Seneta.
