Nairobi’s South Sudan Embassy Closed Due to Rent Arrears

The South Sudanese Embassy in Kenya is currently non-operational following its closure over rent arrears.

Radio Tamazuj reported that the mission vacated its offices on Friday, November 7.

The embassy was located in Senteu Plaza, Kilimani, Nairobi, and was reportedly paying $9,000 (about KSh 1.16 million) in monthly rent.

Sources indicate that the embassy has accumulated over a year of unpaid rent, leading to the shutdown of its operations in Kenya.

The landlord is said to have locked the embassy’s premises, forcing the mission, led by Ambassador Anthony Louis Kon, to fly to Juba.

Authorities in Juba have reportedly appealed to President Salva Kiir to intervene and resolve the situation.

Since gaining independence 14 years ago, Kenya has remained a key partner for South Sudan, which has had a single president since 2011.

The government has not yet released an official statement outlining the next steps.

Observers note, however, that a sovereign nation has the right to close an embassy in another country for various reasons, including financial constraints, diplomatic tensions, or security concerns.
