New Harambee Stars striker Micah Obiero has opened up on why working with Benni McCarthy is one of the biggest moments of his football career so far.
The young forward described the opportunity as a dream come true, saying the Harambee Stars coach is someone he has admired for years because of his success as a striker at the highest level of football.
Obiero believes learning directly from McCarthy will help improve his game and shape him into a better attacker as he begins his international journey with Harambee Stars.
McCarthy enjoyed a successful playing career across Europe, featuring in top leagues in the Netherlands, Spain, Portugal, and England. One of his greatest achievements came with FC Porto where he won the UEFA Champions League under legendary coach José Mourinho. He later became a fan favourite in the English Premier League after scoring consistently for Blackburn Rovers.
Speaking about the experience of training under the South African legend, Obiero said McCarthy’s experience as a striker makes him the perfect mentor.
“It’s exciting because he played in my position and understands the game from a striker’s perspective. The level he reached in football is something every young forward dreams about. Learning from him can really help me improve,” said Obiero.
The striker also described his national team call-up as a proud and emotional moment after enjoying a strong season in England. According to Obiero, finally getting the opportunity to represent Kenya feels like a reward for years of hard work and patience.
“It is a special feeling to be recognized and called up to represent Kenya. I’m proud and ready to give my best,” he added.
Although this is his first appearance in the Harambee Stars setup, Kenya had shown interest in him years ago during his time at Huddersfield Town. However, the move did not materialise then.
Obiero’s connection to Kenya remains strong through his family roots. His father, Aggrey Obonyo Obiero, comes from Bondo in Siaya County and was once involved in football back home.
The striker also credited his younger brother, Zech Obiero, for encouraging him to join the national team. Zech has already represented Kenya internationally and shared positive experiences about the country and its football culture.
“Zech always spoke positively about Kenya and the love fans have for football. That really motivated me to come and represent the country,” he said.
Obiero is expected to link up with his Wealdstone FC teammate Deon Woodman in camp as Harambee Stars continue preparations for upcoming matches.
The striker has now promised supporters that he is ready to fight for the badge and make the nation proud whenever called upon.
