Lionel Messi’s dream of leading Inter Miami to its first CONCACAF Champions Cup title ended on Wednesday night.
After trailing 2-0 from the first leg, Miami began its comeback attempt with a strong start when former Spain international Jordi Alba scored just nine minutes into the match. Messi, playing from midfield, threaded the ball to Luis Suarez, who then found Alba on the left. Alba’s low drive managed to slip past Japanese keeper Yohei Takaoka at his near post.
Instead of sitting back with their one-goal lead, the Vancouver Whitecaps decided to go on the attack, knowing that an away goal could be crucial. This strategy worked against Miami, as they remained vulnerable to counterattacks.
In the first half, Messi had a half-chance that he shot high and wide, while his compatriot Tadeo Allende was unable to capitalize on his scoring opportunities.
Messi did have a couple of late efforts, but by that time, the match was already out of reach. The aging Miami team was outplayed by Vancouver, who is now determined to become the first Canadian team to win the competition.
With a 3-1 victory in south Florida, the Vancouver Whitecaps advanced to the final with a 5-1 aggregate score. Looking ahead, Miami’s focus will shift to their pursuit of a first MLS Cup and their upcoming FIFA Club World Cup campaign.
“Although it was the first time the club had advanced to the semifinals, the defeat hurts us a lot because we envisioned reaching the final. We wanted to see this team, which has a short history, compete in the final of the most important competition in CONCACAF,” stated Javier Mascherano.
“However, we must accept that our opponents outplayed us. Now we need to focus on the MLS. I’m not thinking about the Club World Cup; there’s a month and a half to go, and it would be a mistake to concentrate on that right now,” he added.
